Virgin Media 1, Virgin TV Thiefs 0. Virgin Media have applied a code update which has crippled cable boxes across the country which were used for receiving cable TV illegally.
Cable boxes affected include the Eurovox, Nokia Dbox, Starview and Kryptview. Users receiving cable TV illegally receive the error message “Please waitcode been updated” and no channels can be accessed. According to industry analyst Ian Waller, “The change is causing false keys to be recorded on a ROM7 update, usually only 1 or 2 characters are wrong, this has been happening on ROM10 and ROM11 updates for the last year. A genuine card can handle the change, an emulator can not.” Virgin Media applied a similar change around a year ago, and it took almost a week for firmware updates for chipped boxes to keep pace. However, from reports coming in the changes by Virgin may not be a simple one off event, but instead being applied on a daily basis.
May 06, 2008 A virgin non sub card was inserted into a modified blue T911 mod loader with 4053 muxs. The virgin non sub card was reset and the atr was sent as usual. How Nagra 3 Cams were Hacked and Cracked Hello hack satellite pirates. Nagra 3 is still strong and without opening in Europe.
Although updates are available on the internet which try to keep track of the changes, if the code changes are being implemented on a daily basis this could make it very difficult for firmware updates to keep track. The result would be a victory for Virgin in their battle against cable piracy, and an end to the widespread use of cable boxes for receiving illegal free cable TV. On another note, Virgin is preparing the launch of Nagra Vision version 3 smart cards to further enhance network security for its Cable TV customers. These new smart cards will increase the encryption capabilities of the existing set top boxes and introduce new features for blocking access to non paying customers and enhanced 'On Demand' security. It is rumoured that Virgin is planning to issue all customers with new smart cards as part of a 'self install' policy. Watch this space for more information as soon as its available.

Sources - techwatch.co.uk, Virgin Media, Nagravision Gotta be good news! I don't know why the news wasn't more widely discussed, although DS don't approve of discussion of it on the whole as threads easily descend too far into detail.
I'm quite sure it came up, it certainly was more widely discussed at cableforum. In practice if the answer was as simple as techwatch believed providers would still be using Nagra 1, but they don't and many are moving away from Nagra 2 and onto Nagra 3. In a rarer example Premiere in Germany are phasing in a move to NDS by 2012 they have such little faith in Nagravision.
Lol how much you guys want a bet that Virgin media's next quarter results will suddenly see an even bigger upsell to tv now all these guys won't be able to receieve it?:D I can't see them all going to Sky. More danger of an even bigger up giving of tv perhaps, there was bugger all up selling in their last quarter results, more services per home sold for less cash.
The people who have these dodgy boxes have them because they don't want to pay for premium channels, a lot of them will be taking a Virgin service purely to keep the connection to the street cabinet. Remove that incentive and who knows what would happen, personally I doubt they would all suddenly decide to start paying for the premium channels which make VM relatively little money anyway, hence the relative reluctance to invest in stronger encryption. I can't see them all going to Sky. Why would any of them 'go to Sky'? They've been prevented from accessing unpaid for content, Sky don't provide this either! The people this affects will be forced to either watch free to air channels through an aerial or look for alternative means to pirate. I doubt many will suddenly see the error of their ways and subscribe to a full package from Virgin (or Sky).
By the way, reading Sirius' links earlier, it appears that Virgin's attempts have been less than entirely successful. Why would any of them 'go to Sky'?

I think tvtimes is meaning if the option to pirate is no longer available this will have a positive effect on Virgin's tv subscribers. Although as hinted at above it could be negative for tv and broadband subscriber numbers and revenues. Some would, though, go to Sky.
Well boys & girls, Virgin media have finally won the war againts piracy on the usage of illegal set top boxes. By easter next year VM would have rolled out their new encyption system 'nagra 3' which in effect will make all those illegal stb out their useless. In Leeds nagra 3 has already been rolled out which was technically a test area for vermin to test out their latest encryption. Well the good news is that this will stop the pirates of obtaining channels without subscription but the bad news is that who will pick up the tab for 'vermin' new encryption system.
Yes the thats right the paying customers. Ok once the new encryption system lands what other options do the pirates have in receiving free tv.the answer is 'cardshare' not with cable but with sky, i will say no more. Roll Out of Nagra3 by VM The long awaited roll out of Nagra 3 by V88g8n Media to encrypt their cable services has begun, with Leeds being the first area of the UK to be upgraded to the new system. According to unconfirmed reports, it will be rolled out across the South of England over January, the Midlands by February, and the North West of England by March. By Easter, all of V88g8n Media’s cable services should be running with Nagra 3 encryption. This will make it virtually impossible for anyone to view premium cable channels broadcast by V88g8n Media except by legitimate paid subscribers, resulting in a serious blow to existing cable pirates. The news has long been expected, after Nagra 3 was rolled out in the Republic of Ireland earlier this year, and hardware upgrades to allow for it to be rolled out in the UK have been sent out through 2009.
While cable pirates will no doubt be disappointed that their favourite premium cable channels will no longer be available for free, V88g8n are offering two months free upgrade on their TV services to new and existing customers. If cable services are no longer wanted, then Sky has been providing special offers on Sky + and Sky HD for the Christmas season to bring in subscribers to premium channels. Of course, there are also options to use Freeview, Freesat, or even use satellite equipment to explore the range of Free To Air (FTA) channels, which do not require subscription services. In the meantime, when approached by Techwatch for comment, a V88g8n Media spokesperson replied “We do not comment on security issues.” Source: Techwatch.

I was of the opinion that my sky card can only be used to receive channels on my sky box, ie specific to my box? Got it: 'Is Nagravision 3 hacked? YES, but not fully. Some boxes are able to view some channels encrypted using Nagravision 3 through a technique called 'card sharing' whereby the encryption status of an existing paid subscriber card is disseminated to other receivers through the use of a networked connection.
Many hackers in the underground FTA testing community are working hard to further crack this security implementation as they have done in the recent past with Nagravision 2. Current underground projects are limited to channels which can be subscribed to. Channels that are not available for subscription such as Special Events and Pay-Per-View programming have so far remained unavailable. mod:Paragraph removed, if you wish to reinstate then please remove all links and references to products used for illagal activity.
What's the problem Ben if Nagra 3 is supposed to be watertight? - Post added at 09:48 - Previous post was at 09:45 - The hackers will always find a way Sirius. Buying dodgy boxes/cards is no different to buying a shirt from some guy who pops into your local one saturday afternoon asking for a few quid for a mcdonalds. However they have not found a way yet and the box sellers know that. The price of the so called free to air boxes have plummeted and the traders who have imported them are not to happy at losing there money.
When you look on the other forums you can quickly work out by there denial of anything N3 who the traders are The rumors are by the way is that Skys card swap is being done to prevent or stop card sharing.
